Universally accepted as the Cornishman’s favourite cake, it is flavoured with Saffron which also gives the cake its distinctive yellow colouration. Originally used by the Spanish to cure meat, several barrels of this strange yellow substance were washed ashore when the Armada foundered in the Western Approaches. Some enterprising housewives of the time, not wishing to waste any of the booty, are thought to have used it in their baking and hence the birth of the Saffron Cake.

The Cornish Pasty was the traditional meal of the Cornish tin miner and still remains a firm favourite within the County. It has been described as the original fast-food and has carved out its own niche in the fast food market. Nowadays many varied ingredients are used in pasty production which differ from the traditional recipe of Steak, Potato, Swede and Onion
